The St. Margarethen quarry is one of the largest and oldest quarries in Europe. Valuable St. Margarethen limestone has been used since ancient times. It is still being mined today and has been used, among other things, in the restoration of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna and in the construction of many buildings along the Vienna Ringstraße. The giant of prehistory has revealed numerous significant fossils (some up to 25 million years old) in the 20th century. Since 2001, the St. Margarethen quarry, along with the Fertö-Neusiedler See region, has been a UNESCO World Heritage site.
