Steppe as far as the eye can see - hat pastures in the Seewinkel region

12.06. - 02.10.2026

Experience Austria's only steppe national park with its cultural landscape, shaped by humans over centuries, which hosts an incredible diversity of plants and animals.

The mosaic of water and meadow areas vaguely resembles the grasslands of Africa and Asia, but maintaining this valuable habitat requires constant management. Even today, herds of cattle are employed to keep the areas open and largely free of trees through grazing and trampling. Species such as the ground squirrel and the lapwing benefit from this extensive farming.
