Salt lakes - unique habitats excursion

10.04. - 11.09.2026

From brine shrimp to wading birds to salt plants - experience with us one of the rarest habitats in Europe!

In the far east of Austria lies a particularly special habitat for Central Europe: the salt lakes. Here in the saline water live brine shrimp, which have existed since the time of the dinosaurs and today serve as important food for birds like the avocet. Along the salty lake edges grow plants that are also found at coastal areas. The constant change between wet and dry creates new microhabitats again and again. However, these extraordinary areas are under great threat: Of the former 140 lakes, only about 45 remain today.
