Johannes Brahms:
String Sextet in G major, Op. 36
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: String Sextet in D minor, Op. 70 “Souvenir de Florence”
Chamber music with a star-studded cast has long been a beloved tradition at HERBSTGOLD. This time, Julian Rachlin gathers an exquisite group of soloists for Johannes Brahms and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Brahms' String Sextet No. 2 serves as the intimate, particularly sophisticated counterpart to the orchestral-minded Sextet No. 1, which was featured at the last festival edition. And Tchaikovsky's equally valuable String Sextet in D minor became famous as “Souvenir de Florence”: In a Florentine hotel, the composer worked on his opera “The Queen of Spades” in 1889/90 and ultimately recalled the impressive nocturnal atmospheres from there when he returned home to Russia, transforming them into music: world and solitude in harmony.
