Something just flows through me”: This is how pianist Gabriela Montero once responded to the question of how she manages to captivate audiences with her large-scale improvisations, the musical themes of which are called out or sung to her mere seconds before. Of course: Born in 1970 in Caracas, Venezuela, she first performed publicly at the age of 5, made her orchestral debut at 8, and won renowned piano competitions by the age of 12 through a scholarship in the USA. Music from her homeland, a melting pot of South and North America, along with a strong social conscience and political awareness, all contributed to Gabriela Montero becoming a celebrated, unique individualist around the world.
